what a scary tattoo you have...
i forgot one last thing about my gym escapade. NO TATTOOS ALLOWED. a few times tomomi asked me if i had a tattoo. i dont so i was like no... but then i asked why it mattered and she told me there is a rule. you cannot have a tattoo and be a member of the gym becuase you might scare someone. WHAT? id like to see that rule be applied in the US. not a chance.
so then this morning i further questioned tomomi on this subject and she told me that she used to work at a gym and they had a lot of foreigners and someone was scared so they comeplained. saying "this is japan? it doesnt feel like it" and so the best way to eliminate the foreigners was to say no tattoo no service. (in japans defense, apparently its common for foreigners to pick up and leave without paying things casue they wont be traced once back in their country and places will be out some money)
but to add too it, if your tattoo is of mickey mouse or something nice, its ok to have it. but a dragon or something scary is out.
but still....i was amazed at this rule. it made me also realize what a multicultural place the US really is. heck im sure we have gyms where english isnt spoken. i know some people dont like this, but we have so many discrimination laws and so on, so that it would be nearly impossible to make a rule like the no tattoos law.
apparantly black suglasses are also a sign of "that type of person" as well.
but i must wonder, what if some people are afraid of cats. would a cat tattoo be scary or cute? clowns?

Well it's not really to keep the foriegners out. Japanese are scared of us even if we dont have a tattoo. It's like a version of sheltered children to the extreme.
But it comes from the tradition that the Yakuza (mafia) had tattoos, sometiems their upper torso would be completely be covered.
So to keep them out and they just tacked on the foriegners part later really.
In Japan
Tattoo = Trouble-maker
jan,
i think you are scary whether you have a tattoo or not, but maybe that's just me. glad to see some updates on here lately, and glad to hear that you are doing well and starting to work out at a gym! hope everything is good for you there on the other side of the ocean and that god is showing you his plan for you there!
mucho love-o,
stan
I think you are wrong in regards to the anti discrimination laws in the United States. If I don't want your business I have the right to refuse you. No law is needed, because if you don't like it (well you can't shop there anyhow) but you can boycott it and it hurts my business. Or even better you can start a shop for your tattooed buddies and make a killing while the others miss out on that business. That's the beauty of capitalism... no law needed.
